and here is the fix to your problem.
Open System Preferences and find the CD & DVD pane. It's in the Hardware section.
Open it and where it says, "When you insert a bland CD:" change the option from Disk Utility to "Ask me what to do"
Now, when you put in a CD, it will ask whether you want to open Finder, iTunes, Disk Utility or some other program.
If you don't like that option, change it to Finder and it will just mount the disc on the desktop ready to have data applied to it.
See, they really were not messing with you after all.

I'm having a terrible time trying to copy data to a cd from a file. When I insert the cd, Disk Utility opens showing it there and asking how I want to erase it. I don't need to erase it, it's brand new. On my old iMac, a cd icon would show on the desktop and all I had to do was drag whatever to it, it would copy it and ask if I wanted to burn it. What am I doing wrong? Or is Apple making the simple Mac more complicated? Thanks,
