If the system is that bugered and infected perhaps it may be of help to simply reformat and reinstall Windows.
That aside, simply changing the jumper on the HDD to CS or Cable Select may be of help.
Other options of use may be at How to take ownership of a file or a folder in Windows XP.
Another possibility may be to access then run a non-destructive System Recovery. You may be able to navigate to System Recovery from pressing the Windows key (between the Ctrl and Alt keys.) But if you choose to perform any kind if Recovery, I would suggest doing this on the bad HHD while it is installed in it's own computer, just for the safety sake of your own computer.
In any case, after removing the bad HHD from your computer I would urge you to scan your system for viruses, spyware, etc. with updated definitions. If any trouble makers got onto your machine, the longer you wait the more trouble they may cause.

Hi There
a freind of mine has asked me to take a look ather broken laptop.
It will boot up to windows but there is no Windows bar at the bottom and it totally screwed as you cannot access anything at all.
I decided to take out the hard drive and insert it into a External Caddy with the intention of getting the data off and re-installing windows xp. when i noticed that when attached to my machine came up with lots of virus error?
i have managed to get to her profile and i can see the contents of the profile but cannot copy or open due to "Access Denined"
My thoughts were that it is an Ownership issue i have changed the owner of that folder ticked the box to aplly with the subfolders but still cannot get access to the files?
also i can only get a security tab (In properties)with her profile folder and not any subfolders within?
repeated this process many times taking care not to get anything wrong with taking ownership. however, i cannot see this being any other issue than an ownership issue?????
I'm now totally confused and decided to get some advice?
any idea's anyone?
P.S. freind would like her machine back by the weekend.
