Copy MP3's from ipod to hard drive

Hi guys. I hope each of you had a Merry Christmas. I wish each of you and your families a Healthy and Prosperous New Year. I want to know if anyone can tell what software I could use to tranfer my songs from my ipod to my hard drive. Some friends told me that they are lots of freeware online that could do the job. Is freeware better than software that is being sold? Please give me some suggestions or advice. Thanks for your help.

You need to tell what machine and OS is in play and then off to google to ask your question.

It's not a new one and well discussed.

I have an ipod Special Edition U2 30GB. My Mac is a G4 using OS 10.5.8 Leopard.
