Cops told Pat K was at watering hole before crash

May 12, 2006 6:11AM PDT

Capitol police in Washington, D.C., investigating U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy?s early-morning car wreck have been told by witnesses that the Rhode Island congressman was at a Capitol Hill bar before the crash, the Herald has learned. source close to the probe said witnesses have told detectives that Kennedy was at the Hawk & Dove before he slammed his Ford Mustang into a security barrier near the U.S. Capitol. The source added that cops are continuing to seek evidence to confirm that Kennedy was at the watering hole.

The Herald reported last week that a Hawk & Dove hostess said the 38-year-old pol is a frequent customer and was drinking in the bar before the May 4 crash. Kennedy has denied he was drinking, blaming the accident on a cocktail of prescription painkillers and sleeping pills. He has since checked into a Minnesota rehab.

A Kennedy spokeswoman declined comment. A Capitol police spokeswoman also refused comment, citing the ongoing probe.

The crash sparked a furor within the Capitol Police Department after angry patrol officers said higher-ranking cops blocked them from giving Kennedy a sobriety test. Police union head Lou Cannon said two watch commanders on duty the night of the crash have been transferred.

THANK YOU!

I wouldn't have found this on my own!

Didn't a crazed maniac by the name of George W. Bush get popped for DUI some time ago?

Apparently not!

Calvin Bridges, the arresting officer in the drunken driving case, said in told The Associated Press that he recalls driving home from work after midnight and spotting a car slipping briefly onto the shoulder before getting back on the road.

Bush, the driver, failed a road sobriety test and a second test in the police station, registering a 0.10 blood-alcohol level -- the legal limit at the time, Bridges said.

Asked about Bush's demeanor, the retired officer said, ''The man was, and I say this without being facetious, a picture of integrity. He gave no resistance. He was very cooperative.''

Sounds quite different from Patrick Kennedy's episode by every account:

red watery eyes
unsteady on feet
slurred speech
driving at high rate of speed
no lights on
in wrong lane
barely misses cop car
slams into barricade
making the absurd claim of being on the way to vote
claims to not remember the whole thing

I rest my case.

BTW, my views on DUI in general have been well articulated here over the years in apolitical threads. It is my considered opinion that many of the DUI laws have gone too far, and some haven't gone far enough. If there were a way to assess the reaction times of the average driver on the street as a means of determining their suitability for driving at any given time, I believe that many a 0.1 BAL driver would far outperform his ''sober'' counterpart. And many would do worse. And there might even be a Johnny Fever or two in the mix that do better after a drink! Wink Nobody would ever conduct that study, but it's true. It's easy to blame alcohol every time alcohol is ''involved'' in an accident, but it's really no more fair than blaming the radio or whatever other distraction/impairment may be at fault. And there are an awful lot of people indignantly driving around impaired on something (be it lack of sleep, bopping along mindlessly to blaring music, OTC or prescription meds that ''cause drowsiness'', etc.) that impose just as serious a risk -- if not more of one, because they are oblivious to the risk they genuinely do pose.

The percent of alcohol related traffic fatalities initially came down some with the big MADD push in the late 80's, but it has basically leveled out. Mostly it is because the repeat and serious offenders -- that caused most of the worst accidents to begin with -- have been taken off the road. If anyone really believes that lowering the BAL limit into the 1-to-2 drink range for some will save lives, then they ought to support FAR stiffer penalties for speeding, ignoring traffic laws, use of CD players in vehicles, eating, drinking (non-alcohol) or smoking while driving, and cell phone use. Cracking down more on any of the latter would probably give better results than any further cracking down on "minor" DUI offenses.

You may not agree with my views, but they are consistent regardless of the political party of the person in question.

Not so sure ...
May 12, 2006 7:38AM PDT

... there are a number of things that can be done. For starters, his "check in" tests at Mayo should be fair game, no? He's admitted an addiction to narcotic painkillers now. Surely whether or not he had prescriptions for these is a legitimate issue. He admits to being impaired on two prescription drugs but claims he wasn't drinking. There's no reason other charges can't at least be filed here. At the very least it would make him face the music even if he manages to skate responsibility. Getting to hide out in rehab is ridiculous, and the public's apparent acceptance of this for the rich and famous is troubling to say the least.'

Trolls will keep coming back after being fed.
I obtained two cats like this, one puppy too. So trolls are like stray dogs and cats, which will purr and wag their tails when played with. Huh the things a person can learn here, all this time I thought trolls were just stupid.

A Kennedy should know better, and should get real help

before it becomes this sort of issue. And I say that as a liberal. However much of an illness it is, you deal with it. If you can't trust yourself, take antabuse. If I go out of the house without Ventolin, I'm almost certain to need it, so I keep spares in the car, in my Wife's purse, at relative's homes where I may be staying, and in a little case I pack in my luggage. (Actually 2 little cases, one the ususal shaving and tooth-brushing case, and one which is purely medicine).

My dad used to get gout, another of those hormone imbalance, improper digestion of certain amino acids diseases. He had colchisine (made from the crocus flower and one of the oldest medications known to man since Alexander the Great took it) squirrelled away everywhere, the car the cottage, his hunting bag, his fishing bag, his pocket, the medicine cabinet, and god knows where else. But he never got caught without.

He had an article cut from a late 1940's Esquire Magazine about gout, in which one sufferer likened having gout to "walking on your eyeballs". Crystals of purines (a family of amino acids) build up in certain joints, usually hands or feet (in my father's case it was the joint at the base of either of his Great Toes, the joint where it joins the foot) and it swells to about twice to three-times the size, turns brilliant red and grows very hot to the touch. Any touch on the joint is agonizing. Another story from the Esquire article was about a guy with allergies who sneezed, and the handkerchief blew out of his hand and floated out and settled gently on his foot. The guy screamed so loudly in pain, the next door neighbours ran over to see what was wrong.

Any way, Pat Kennedy has had this problem long enough to act responsibly. I agree that it's an illness, but he's compounding it with stupidity which shouldn't be tolerated.

... for a change of pace. Too bad others can't do so as well.

Unfortunately I think Patrick has an overabundance of enablers as well. What he needs is to get out of public life and get his private life in order. This will take monthS, if not YEARS, not a couple more weeks at Mayo then back to the House floor once the flack from the latest adventure has blown over. I'm not so sure he can escape it this time. And I hope not, because if this didn't get him to get the real help he needs, I fear what might have to happen to actually do.
