Cops told Pat K was at watering hole before crash

May 12, 2006 6:11AM PDT

Capitol police in Washington, D.C., investigating U.S. Rep. Patrick Kennedy?s early-morning car wreck have been told by witnesses that the Rhode Island congressman was at a Capitol Hill bar before the crash, the Herald has learned. source close to the probe said witnesses have told detectives that Kennedy was at the Hawk & Dove before he slammed his Ford Mustang into a security barrier near the U.S. Capitol. The source added that cops are continuing to seek evidence to confirm that Kennedy was at the watering hole.

The Herald reported last week that a Hawk & Dove hostess said the 38-year-old pol is a frequent customer and was drinking in the bar before the May 4 crash. Kennedy has denied he was drinking, blaming the accident on a cocktail of prescription painkillers and sleeping pills. He has since checked into a Minnesota rehab.

A Kennedy spokeswoman declined comment. A Capitol police spokeswoman also refused comment, citing the ongoing probe.

The crash sparked a furor within the Capitol Police Department after angry patrol officers said higher-ranking cops blocked them from giving Kennedy a sobriety test. Police union head Lou Cannon said two watch commanders on duty the night of the crash have been transferred.

Re: Some theories also say Ted never knew she was in
May 14, 2006 9:35PM PDT

I imagine that some theories say the whole thing was attribitable to moon beams. That doesn't say that anyone believes that theory.

Timelines show that Kennedy called her parents to offer condolences before he reported the incident to the police. He knew she was there, and anyone who thinks an aid was in the car has been in the moon beams too long.

I was offering a possible explanation for his lying about whether he had been drinking. I was not trying to excuse the DUI itself.

I believe drunk driving is a very serious offense, regardless of who is doing it. Do you?

Yes ...
May 14, 2006 11:37PM PDT

... driving DUI with a BAL of around 0.15-to-0.2 is very serious. Most of the DUI's that came in the summer I worked for the county lab were in the 0.2+ range. Get them off the road and keep them off the road.

While charts and tables can approximate your BAL by your weight and the number of drinks you have consumed,
the following is how your body feels different levels of intoxication:
BAL 0.02% - lightheaded & loosened inhibitions
BAL 0.05% - warm and relaxed
BAL 0.10% - possible blackout and memory loss
BAL 0.15% - severely impaired judgment and perception
BAL 0.20% - nausea or vomiting
BAL 0.25% - emotionally and physically numb
BAL 0.30% - drunken stupor
BAL 0.35% - may stop breathing
BAL 0.40% - coma

This is what *they* say about BAL's. This doesn't square with the BAL's here: http://www.beerboozebooks.com/bal.htm

I'm beginning to wonder how I survived college and was able to even walk home or manage the stairs into the busses at the end of the evening. Sheesh.

While we're taking things seriously and just applying a black and white standard, don't you think all parents who do drugs are totally irresponsible?

Bush's BAL was .10

So he could have blacked out while driving that car. Good thing he got stopped; it might have saved his life or someone else's.

As to the drugs question, I don't think a couple of hits off a joint is any worse than a couple of drinks, aside from it being illegal. I don't think getting drunk or stoned while caring for a child is good parenting.

I'm guessing you're making a reference to my ''there isn't enough weed'' post. I was joking. The last time I smoked pot was around 10 years ago.

You may be right

Suffocation would have been worse, because it would mean she was consious for some time and knew she was trapped. She was also drunk so it would have been harder for her to try to save herself.

DUI is not really the issue Josh. That's why your attempts to make it the issue are so offensive and patently partisan.

The issue is GETTING AWAY with DUI. Thumbing your nose at the law. That's what both Kennedy's have done. They've used their position to escape prosecution.

The Bush's, neither one, did this. They faced up to their offense, and accepted a court's judgement, and that's why the Bush experience is irrelevant. They paid the penalty, defeated their demons, and moved on to constructive lives. It's a shame that Democrats think they they don't have to do this.

Laura had demons?
May 15, 2006 10:57PM PDT

What were they?

And any recovering alcoholic will tell you that you never defeat your demons; you just keep them in check, one day at a time.

Bush was cooperative when arrested; I'll give him that. But Evie tried to make it sound like he got stopped for a broken taillight or something.

Instead, you try to paint a sympathetic picture while not extending the same consideration to Bush who overcame his problem years ago.

That's really pathetic.

I'm just checking Evie for consistency and finding none, as usual.

I have no problem with prosecuting Kennedy for his DUI. I was trying to explain the lying, not the driving.

never responded to it. Bush did not meet that definition, and he was duly penalized in court as provided for by the law. That is ancient history which is only relevant because you are trying to excuse Kennedy's behaviour and privileged treatment.

And if you really want to get technical....
May 14, 2006 11:24PM PDT

...she didn't drown. There was an air pocket in the car and she suffocated when the oxygen supply ran out. Worse than drowning, probably.

I read a very good book about Chappaquiddick a few years ago called Senatorial Privilege. Thorough (and not sympathetic to Ted K.), it's a good read. The author had less problem with the steps Kennedy says he took to try to get Mary Jo out of the car than with what he did afterwards, which was go back to his hotel and try to create an alibi for himself. There were any number of houses he could have stopped at along the way to try to get some help but he didn't.

The author also goes into some detail about the various theories about what may really have happened that night, including the ''Teddy wasn't in the car'' theory (which also does not exculpate him from any responsibility). It is plausible if you read it through.

breath the last available air and then drown? It could not be determined because her family filed petition to bar a autopsy. Wonder why, was it because of further embarrasement to both families.

Note attorney bills & no law suit:

"Kopechne's family received a small payout from the Kennedy's insurance policy, and never sued. There was later an effort to have her body exhumed and autopsied, but her family successfully fought against this in court, and Kennedy's family paid their attorney's bills."
