There is a very good online site for Video conversion information and more. It is Videohelp.com. This site has forums,(much like this one), reviews of new hardware, quides, software reviews, reviews and ratings for media, and much more. I would strongly recommend that you give a good deal of thought to the final output requirements before you start. There are a few products that will let you convert your VHS tapes simply (at VHS or Broadcast Quality). These are probably fine if you are saving your existing Home movies or favorite VHS tapes. Be aware that there are several products that are designed for putting video on the internet, and are not going to produce a DVD that is close to your original tape. Learn a little bit about the quality differences between Mpeg1 and Mpeg2, and some about bit rate sampling. The quality of the final product will be determined by these factors, and others. However if your goal is to SIMPLY copy your tapes at their original quality for your home use, and add menus and chapters, I would look at the HP movie writer dc4000 (about $300.)It is a stand alone unit that has a built in capture card and DVD burner. Be aware HP's dc 3000 only burns R+ disks where the dc 4000 burns R+ or R- disks. I have a dc4000 and am very happy with it. I also have used a Dazzle DVD Complete capture box with OK results, but it does not have the built in burner. Pinnicle who bought Dazzle also makes cards to capture video. If you go to Videohelp.com you will se that there are many products and techniques discribed that will help you with this. Good luck this is good fun and very rewarding.
Can anyone direct me to a website that will provide an outline for the necessary hardware, software and, methods involved to convert my VHS tapes to DVD's .If anyone has any specific input on hardware or software from thier personal experience I would welcome that also. Thanks in advance.
