Question

converting DSL/fiber optic port on router to analong/POTS

Aug 17, 2017 5:18PM PDT

Hello! I am trying to find out if I can convert the DSL port on my router to an analog/POTS phone line? We are trying to connect our home alarm system to our digital phone line (as a back up to the cell phone line), but the frequency discrepancy prevents them from communicating. I've been trying to read up on this, but no luck! Any advice/suggestions are appreciated. TIA.

How do you plug in your phones now?

If no phones work on this I suggest you call your alarm company for an upgrade. My neighbor just did this and the alarm company installed a new system that is over cellular. Cost of the upgrade? Zero. Monthly charges dropped 10 bucks a month too.

Just in case you have no phone at all.

The fiber optic tech hooked up two phone lines that were existing in the house. Our alarm system wiring is in the same area as the router, so we were hoping to go straight from back of router DSL port to the alarm board. We already have the cell part in place. We just want the analog line to be a back-up, if possible.

Get a Magic Jack Plus

I use mine direct to LAN port on router, then a splitter on the other side to house wiring. I have the house wiring disconnected on outside of house to avoid it grounding out. I also have 4 DECT6 Panasonic phones, and the base station on the other side of the phone wire splitter. All of it works with the Magic Jack, all of it now VOIP including use of the older standard analog phones.

I forgot about Magic Jack. I'll check that out.
