Can you read on the cd?
Mar 9, 2009 8:15AM PDT

your post tends to indicate that you can.
If so you can try file save as, to a location on the hard drive, failing that, copy all on that document and paste it into a new document and save to the hard drive.

That's A Different Issue.. It's Not a 'Read Only' File..
Mar 9, 2009 9:34AM PDT

It could be a "BAD" file.. If the file can't be read correctly on the CD, how do you expect it to be read on the desktop.. It sounds like the file is corrupted. Have you tried placing the CD on a different computer and using their MS Word to read the file.. If it still doesn't read correctly, then the file is bad..

On the other hand, if the other computer reads the document correctly, let us know.. There is the universal "Word" fix which involves deleting all "normal.dot" files from the problem computer, then restarting the machine and attempting to open the Word document again.

Hope this helps.

different issue

wouldn't I get an error saying corrupt file or unreadable something like that? l've got 2 cd's with the same file and I've put them on other puter and I get the message that it is a readible only file.

Clearly The File Doesn't Work..
Mar 9, 2009 2:41PM PDT

And yes, placing a document from a finalized CD WILL cause it to be listed as a "read only" file.. That's well known and that's what's being created on the other computers. (Burning a file to a finalized CD causes the document to be uneditable till it's copied OFF the CD and placed to a desktop where an uncorrupted file can be changed from "read only".) What was asked before is if the same file, when copied to a different computer, will open correctly?

Still, a normal "read only" file doesn't mean the file is unreadable which is what you've described to us so far.. The only way it could become unreadable is for the file to be corrupted or to have been created by a corrupted/incorrect program format..

Of course, there ARE other possibilities such as the .doc file isn't .doc file at all.. Maybe the file is a renamed .pdf file or something similar but you haven't mentioned that possibility to us so those possibilities have been discounted.

Hope this helps.

What is the extension of the file on the CD?

Little blocks instead of words tells me it's not a actual .doc file.

Corrupted file.

Just give up, get your latest hardcopy and start typing again.

Or see if one of your backups has a readable (maybe somewhat older) version.
