Question

converting a projection TV to a soundbar

Aug 16, 2015 11:45AM PDT

I have an older Toshiba 55" projection TV and wish to know if there's a way to remove the upper TV portions and innards and convert the remainder to a sound system/base for a new larger flat-screen. The current sound is excellent and I hate to lose it.

Certainly a project.

My guess is this would be something you would photograph along the way to post on make.com later. My bet is that you would break it down to the speaker area then recycle some the the wood panels to make a new uber sound bar. Since the electronics are gone I think some nice amp could stand in then a connection panel of your own design.

I'm thinking Skil saw, glue, drills wire which we recycle from the old bits and then a new amp like:

indeed!

Is it not possible to remove the video elements without removing the electronics that power and control the sound system? Wouldn't they be separate or at least, capable of being isolated?

If they could be

You would do that. There would be no one on the web documenting this. I looked and you would have too. That's why I think this is one of those DIY projects with saws, glue, screws, a new amp and such.

It's a nice entry level electronics project.
