Convert old computer to HDTV Dvd player and broadcaster?

Oct 18, 2009 11:30AM PDT

I have an old computer (Dell P4 2.8ghz w/ HT) that I want to use as a DVD player and media center for my HDTV. I am taking my old flat panel out of my living room where it is connected to an upconverting DVD player, and HD cablebox and want to put it in my bedroom. I have the computer laying around and found that the back of the TV has a VGA input. Is there a way to make the computer an upconverting DVD player as well as able to broadcast internet TV in HD? Also, are there sites that show HD content or broadcast shows?

Up converting? Maybe . . .

The PC VGA (D-sub) port will output whatever resolution the TV will handle, providing the video output of the PC will match it. Don't expect HD results.

I used an old Compaq Vio (or something like that) as my media server. It was connected to my Sony 55" SXRD and to my home wireless network. I could surf and watch Net "stuff". But the resolution was not full 1080P as my TV supports.

But it was watchable.

Thanks for the info, I wasn't sure how good it would look with the VGA out. Was it like watching standard def on an HDTV? SOunds like you have a similar setup to what i'm going for.

at the resolution supported by the VGA port on the TV. Even though my Sony 55" is a 1080P, the VGA input was less. Something like 1380 X 768. But as I said, totally watchable. I had a wireless mouse and keyboard and could sit at the couch and surf, watch downloaded movies and TV, etc. Doom is really fun on that size screen.
