No product key?
by John.Wilkinson / January 27, 2008 7:53 AM PST

How/why did you upgrade to Vista Home Basic then?

Regardless, the only option now is to wipe the hard drive and reinstall Windows XP from your original XP CD, your XP product key in hand. Note that this will result in the loss of all files and installed software, so you'll want to connect the hard drive to another computer and back up anything you can't afford to lose, remembering to take ownership where necessary.

Where'd XP come from?

Was it preinstalled, did you purchase a retail copy, did you purchase an OEM copy, or...? What happened to the CD? Do you still have the original product key?

The future is looking bleak here, but there may yet be a solution.

In this case it really does matter if it was preinstalled OEM, OEM, or retail, and whether or not your still have the XP product key.

Your Vista Install Was An Upgrade From XP...Do You Have?
by Grif Thomas Forum moderator / January 27, 2008 12:00 PM PST

..the original Recovery discs that came with your computer.. (Many machines require you to create them shortly after you setup the computer the first time.) Those Recovery discs should allow you to reinstall XP and all the software as it came from the factory. Either way, you'll need those recovery discs or an XP Cd to reinstall everything again.

Hope this helps.
