Continued problems when trying to connect a DVD R/W

My partner has tried to connect a DVD R/W to our Hi-Grade computer. As he wasn't able to do so I have gone in this morning to have a go and My Computer has been completely wiped out of all Drives. I've put the Windows ME disc in again and managed to find the drives by going in through My Documents. When I click on the E Drive I get the message:
Windows Cannot Find "AUTORUN.EXE" This program is needed for opening files of type "File" Location of "AUTORUN.EXE" C:\ . It then gives me the option OK, Cancel or Locate.

Can anyone help me, please???
