When I prepare an e-mail for distribution I have lost the availability of my contact groups.

I am using the latest version of Apple Mail so, if your question relates to that, read on.
On a new mail message form there is an icon showing a head and shoulders silhouette that, when clicked, brings up contacts from the Apple Address Book.
