Constantly getting disconnected (Cable ISP)

Sep 24, 2004 2:18PM PDT

This just started happening about 2 days ago. I'll be online (always online with cable internet) and the internet connection will just die, I'll have to reset the modem, router or the computer to get it back online. As far as I know it?s not my ISP (Road Runner San Diego.) Their network does go down a little too often but they are pretty good about informing their customers, since its after hours I can?t call them. I'm using a wireless router with the main computer connected thought an eithernet cable (other comps use the wireless feature.) Im running ZoneAlarm 4 with a home network established, the firewall zones are all set up exactly the same as they were when the internet was working fine. As for the cable modem it does one of two things. One, it either resets on its own (this usually happens when RR screw with something at their end) or two, all activity stops but according to the modem im still online but according to the router I'm not (this is probably just a refresh error.)
If anyone knows if this is something at my end or a problem with my ISP please tell me, and how to fix it.

Narrow it down.

I read you are resetting everything. As such you haven't found the issue.

Start with your PC. Yes/No?

Then the next part (router) Yes/No?

Then the modem. Yes/No?

Keep track of what part fixes it and then replace that part.

Did you ever figure out why you were being disconnected? I'm having this exact same problem.

This one was 8 months stale. We also need you to read and follow the Note at the top of the message page - What specific operating system and specific hardware are at issue. Otherwise, there are too many variables to make any sort of diagnosis.

constantly getting DC'd

Is your incoming source "box" outside? Probably is, right? I had this same problem & my brother said to cover the box with a plastic bag. A one gallon bag fits perfectly over it without sealing it completely as this would cause condensation. Well, it rained yesterday & no problem staying "connected"! Also, the modems themselves do have "updates" from time to time. The provider doesn't tell you this tho. I had to find out myself!

Constantly getting Dc'd------>>> FIXED!

Finally, after approximately 18 months of frustration and very feeble attempts by my provider's level 3 tech support ( in-house visits too numerous to list), 8 different modems graciously provided by my gratuituos provider, the last tech solved the problem by merely switching the outside lines that went to the landline phone and my DSL! Phone is static-filled on rainy days but DSL has stayed connected! Allejuiah! Oh---FULL monthly bills were promptly sent each & every month----********!!
