Constant Windows Shutdowns on my HP Pavilion

Jul 21, 2010 8:08AM PDT

Hey everyone,

I have an HP Pavilion Entertainment PC which is probably over two years old now. Its specs include Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium SP1, AMD Turion 64 x2 Mobile Technology TL-60, with 4.0 GB of RAM, and NVIDIA MCP67M.

Over the past two months or so, my HP has been randomly shutting down and not switching back on. Once I turn my laptop back on, which may often take several attempts (the laptop will either shut off again or it will remain on one of the start-up screens where it is seemingly frozen), I either get a Start Windows Normally black screen (I'm paraphrasing) or a Launch Start-up Repair black screen.

I always leave my laptop on for 24 hours or more, which is obviously not a great idea. However, in the past, keeping my laptop on for long durations of time did not cause random shutdowns due to overheating. That said, I believe overheating is a culprit here but I also think it goes beyond this (due to the Launch Start-up repair black screen I mentioned above). The start-up/boot process is not consistent in that I may be able to load Vista on my first attempt or it may take multiple attempts.

If anyone has any thoughts, comments, or suggestions, I'd truly appreciate hearing them. If I've been too vague in the description of my problem please ask me to elaborate with specific questions.
Thanks a lot!

May be the usual dv6000/9000 other model.

This model is well known for such behavior. Type DV6000 RECALL at google to learn more.

Bob and Maceman,

Thanks for your replies. I'm checking into the problem now.
In regards to the recall Bob, I'm not experiencing many of the problems that are described as symptoms of the faulty notebooks like "the notebook issuing a single beep" and so forth. My problem seems to be related but not entirely congruous. That, however, is just my first thought. The problem undoubtedly is related to the temperature of the notebook. I'm going to install some appropriate updates and take it from there.
Thanks again!

The problem extends to models

Beyond the dv6000/9000 and beyond the ones you will find with a google. In short the AMD+Nvidia chips from those years are all suspect.

Good luck but CALL IT IN to lock the earliest possible reporting date.

Heat?

Hey Progressive86,

Maybe it's just running hot. Check out that the ventilation holes and the fan are clean. If you use it on your lap, buy a cooling pad.
