Everything depends upon your intended use and six mp could be more than enough. A few years ago I bought my wife a brand new compact 7.1mp camera. It was a joke and waste of money, last year I replaced it with a top end 4mp Canon point/shoot and she loves it even though it cost me peanuts. Far better photographs in every way than the 7mp ever took.
Sure check out the camera and if you were sent untouched photo's then there is a program you can use to open that photo and see the shutter count on the camera. It's called Opanda IExif and free to download and use. You can check the spec's on the D70 to see what the shutter is rated at and do some comparison. This saves you from buying a camera overworked or very well worked by a Pro.
Hey I just paid more money to pickup a D2H with same lens at that's a 4mp camera. For my use the 4mp is plenty because I don't crop heavily and never intend to make larger than an 8x10. I've seen that same lens go for quite a bit more than $200 so yeah doesn't sound a bad deal to me because anything new for $300 you wouldn't be happy with.
I'm thinking about buying a used Nikon D70s. It seems like a great deal -- the body and kit 18-55 lens for $300. It seems like the lens alone is worth $150. I'm feeling ready to jump on it but I have a couple questions.
1 -- It's 6.1 megapixels, which is much less than what newer cameras have. Seems like I've read that megapixel count isn't really that important once you get up to 6 or so. So I'm not too worried about that but wonder if I should be.
2 -- Buying used. I'm a little nervous about this. I've asked to see pictures taken with the camera to make sure the sensor is clean, but I'm wondering if there's anything else I should be wary of. It's pretty clear that buying used is the only way I'm going to be able to get into a dSLR right now and I've determined that that is the way I want to go.
I'm viewing this camera as a way for me to get started (finally). Once I've got lenses and all I figure I can always upgrade to a newer body later (especially since this one is basically costing me $150.)
