Considering a PS3 for a Blu Ray player

Nov 2, 2008 6:15AM PST

I'm not sure if this is going to be a good option. Is the Blu Ray player on the PS3 a good option? Or would I benefit more from getting a player that is strictly for Blu-ray.... I am used to products that are used for multiple purposes to not be good at all of them, so I'm worried a video game system won't be the best when it comes to movies. I don't really think a full Blu-Ray player is something that is needed for the needs I'm looking at. But, at the same time I don't really think the PS3 is a system that is a must have. However, combining the two I think it would make more worth while, but I don't want to sacrafice the quality of the Blu-Ray so there is a video game system too.

Thanks!

the PS3 is a very fine option

Its not the VERY best in BD PQ, but that's not even going to matter unless you have a really top notch display.

PS3 seems like a great choice. Kid will be much too happy.

Only thing I wonder about is if it can be placed with adequate ventilation. Some have complained about loud fan noise, which usually occurs when ventilation is not ample.

I think that it may be a good option in that case. Since it won't be the main TV it won't be the best display, thinking about a 32" bravia. So I think it will still work okay.

I've actually been reading that the PS3 has a really quite fan compared to the Xbox, so I think I will look more into too (I've not really researched it that much yet, I'm just trying to figure everything out right now) I will be getting a media center to put it in, which will have a specfic space to put it in. The space has a door, with a glass cover and the door can open. As far as an opening in the back, I believe there is one, but I'm not certain as I've not purchased it yet, so I will have to look into that as well.

Thanks for your help. You have given me a lot of help as well plenty of things to look into.

Thanks again!

PS3 ?

I own a PS3 and I didn't like it at first. Not because of the image quality, which was spectacular, but because of the fact that I needed to sift through setup options that were geared for a game system. Then I bought the separate remote for the PS3 and for me, it made it operate like a stand-alone BR player. The PS3 is great because you can easily download firmware updates, and you will need to do this almost immediately if you buy one. If you don't buy a PS3, the Panasonic BD50 might be a good option. I've always had great luck with Panasonic DVD players.

Thanks for the suggestion

I would definitely get the remote if I were to go with the PS3. From what I have been reading it is a must have, so it will just be another to put on the shopping list!

Thanks again!
