Question

connectivity/Outlook/software installation problem

Dec 6, 2012 9:17PM PST

Dear wizards, can you help with the following problem?

[+] Firefox works
[+] downdloading files works (antivirus/Java etc.)

[-] antivirus/Java etc. installation gets interrupted (error message: 'current settings prevent a connection to the internet')
[-] Internet Explorer (backup browser) starts ok but does not open any pages at all.
[-] Outlook opens but does not send/receive ('server cannot be found on network')

[Windows Vista SP3]

Thanks for your help.

How do those programs behave if you boot into Safe Mode and try again?

Hi Kees,

When booting up in Safe Mode with Networking, the problem is exactly the same, i.e.:

Firefox opens pages and downloads files without problem, but when installing downloaded software (antivirus etc.) an error message pops up: 'The installer cannot proceed with the current Internet Connection settings.'

while Outlook displays this error message: 'The server name you entered cannot be found on the network.'

[PS: I should have specified that this is not a wireless problem; I am connected/wired to a broadband modem.]

Any suggestions? Thanks. Newbie

Did you compare ...

the Internet Connection settings on your machine with those on a laptop (of a friend or family member) that DOES work with your modem? Were they the same?

Hi Kees,

I finally managed to check out the modem with another laptop which works fine; the limited connectivity must be due to a problem with the settings on my comp.

In the meantime two additional problems have cropped up: a PDF maker no longer works with MS Word and MS Word can no longer find or install printers.

Would it make sense to do a system restore? (I've never done one before.)

Thanks for your help!
