General discussion

connection refused

Oct 30, 2006 6:06AM PST

I have XP Home. Recently I was having trouble connecting to my ISP, Net Zero(dial up) so I uninstalled the following; Zone Alarm, ADWare, Spybot, and AVG Free antivirus. Now, I can't get Zone Alarm re-installed and when I re-install the others, I can not get connected to any of them to get updates. I get a message saying the connection failed. I received an error message from Spybot while trying to update saying: ''Socket error #1061 Connection refused'' I have ''System Restore'' turned off and also have Windows firewall turned off. I am not having any problems now connecting to the Internet or my email.

How do I fix this?

Well, I have to assume your trying to get those updates while your connected to the internet, sooooo, maybe you have a virus that is stopping you from getting these updates & or getting connected. I would run one or all of the following 'free' online scans to see if the problem gets resolved: A-Squared On Line Trojan Scan -- http://www.windowsecurity.com/trojanscan/
BitDefender On Line Scan -- http://www.bitdefender.com/scan8/ie.html
F-Secure On Line Scan -- http://support.f-secure.com/enu/home/ols.shtml
House Call Anti-Virus http://housecall.trendmicro.com/housecall/start_corp.asp
Kaspersky http://usa.kaspersky.com/services/free-virus-scanner.php
In addition, you really do need some kind of firewall, at the very least the windows firewall needs to be active. Once you think your making progress, I would really reenable "System Restore". If you meet with some success, post back and maybe the other issues can be addressed.
Good luck,
Eddie

Connection problems...

Tell more on the initial connection problem. What sort of trouble did you have ? If you have connection problems, of course you will not be able to get updates.

Initially, I turned on the computer one morning and I could not connect to my ISP. I have dial up with Net Zero. I spent many hours on the telephone talking with their "tech support" but never could correct the problem. I then signed up with People PC but could not get connected with them either. Just so there could be no possibility of a interference problem I uninstalled, AVG Free, Zone Alarm, Spybot, and Ad-Aware. That didn't help. I then carried the PC to Comp USA. They kept it for a day and checked it out and said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I brought it home, hooked it all back up and it connected without problems and has ever since. I tried to install Zone Alarm back on to it but have not been able to,....something about a "True Vector" problem. I have been able to install the others, but am not able to update any of them, which makes them pretty much useless.

ZoneAlarm

It may be your ZoneAlarm firewall that is blocking access to the anti-malware update sites.

But the TrueVector problem needs sorting out first. TrueVector is ZoneAlarm's first line of defence against hackers, and loads up before the Operating System loads. This is because, on a broadband, ''always on'' connection, the computer is connected to the network very early on during the bootup phase. This is a vulnerable time as no other anti-malware software can start until Windows is loaded fully. So TrueVector is loaded before Windows, to guard against attack. As you are on a dial-up, there is no problem.

If you can tell us what the TrueVector error report says, that would help. If it is not loading, or is not working, I would do this;

1] Turn on the Windows Firewall so you have basic protection.

2] Download and save to your Desktop ZoneAlarm's setup files from ZoneLabs

If you already have the install file, you can use that instead.

If your version of ZoneAlarm is the paid version, make sure you have your license number saved.

3] Uninstall ZoneAlarm using the instructions from ZoneLabs here;
http://nh2.nohold.net/noHoldCust25/Prod_1/Articles55646/ManualUninstall.html

(Note, you may have to enter their forums first, and accept their conditions before doing so).

4] Reboot, and run a Registry Cleaner, (eg CCleaner), to remove any orphan registry entries.

5] Reboot again.

6] Re-install ZoneAlarm. If you see an option to retain all previous settings, do not choose it.

7] When ZoneAlarm is full installed, turn off the Windows Firewall, and reboot. This will tell you if there are any problems with TrueVector.

To set program permissions;

Cool Open the ZoneAlarm control panel, (double click the ZA icon in the System Tray near the clock), and click on ''Program Control'' on the left, then click the ''Main'' tab.

9] Set the ''Program Control'' slider to medium, and the ''Smart Defense'' slider, (if applicable to your version of ZA), to medium.

10] Click the ''Programs'' tab. Scroll down, and for each entry for your other anti-malware utilities, make sure none of them have a red cross for any of their entries. If they do, click each red cross, and change the option to either ''Allow'', (automatic access), or ''Ask'', (you will be prompted each time).

You can always set ZA to allow permanent access within the balloon warning when it appears asking you what you want it to do.

I hope this helps.
