Did you call AOL support?

Have you tried XP's resident PPPoE?

Hi! I had to switch from my Westbell DSL modem to SBC Siemens SpeedStream 4100 Ethernet ADSL Modem and SBC DSL service due to AOL change.
My activation service for SBC was on the 27th. My other DSL service was working fine (all filters are installed, etc). I installed the SBC software and hooked up my new modem accordingly. All lights on the modem are working correctly.
Via the CD software, the modem attempts to connect and the connection fails. After several retry's, I called SBC. They had me try to connect via Internet Explorer --> File --> Open, plug in their address, their login window comes up, they gave me a username and password, and still the connection fails.
They had me check the ping -- they said it was okay.
We turned off all virus protection/firewall stuff, deleted cookies, cleaned out temp files, switched internet options back to default, etc. Still, no connection.
SBC tech finally said "XP has been having some problems", but when I asked what they were, tech had no answer (to me, that translates to "I don't know what's happening.") SBC tech advised me to call Microsoft, which is no help.
I tried installing on another computer -- same problem. I did a diagnostic on my Connection (on both computers), and this is what came up:
Ethernet: Pass
ADSL: Pass
ATM: Check ATM cell-delineation to PPPoE: Pass
ATM: Check ATM signal: Pass
Perform ATM OAM Segment Ping: FAIL
Perform ATM OAM End To End Ping: FAIL
All PPP tests FAIL (Check PPPoE Connection to Ethernet; Check PPP Connection to PPPoE; Check PPPoE Server Connectivity; Check PPPoE Server Session)
Authentication: Check Authentication with PPP Server: FAIL
I also got: "The far end did not respond to PPPoE requests".
Does anyone out there know what to do?
Computer: DELL Dimension 2350; Windows XP Home; Version 2002; SP1; Pentium 4; AOL 9.0
Thanks in advance.

Hi!
Nope. It's a 4100 Modem. Are those ancient or something (I don't know anything about SpeedStreams)?
Thanks for the great links. I haven't called AOL support. I talked to SBC again last night; got a real friendly tech who seemed to be trying everything he could from that end....the connection tested fine where he was despite the readings I was getting. So, they are going to send someone out to my house in the next few days. I wanted to be able to try to solve this myself if I could (i.e., get it up and running sooner without having to incur extra costs), but also didn't want to spend hours getting the runaround on the telephone.
I'm sorry....what does it mean to try "XP's resident PPPoE"?
Thanks again for the fast reply ![]()

Your modem probably handles the PPPoE log-on for you. Here's more on the 4100. http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,13381843?hilite=4100
means using network connection wizard to configure your DSL rather than using SBC software. I have been running 2 PCs this way and just set up a 3rd for a friend. The software probably isn't the pronlem, but it is unnecessary. I have never heard of XP having problems with DSL service. BTW Siemens has pretty good tech support and I believe that's who makes your modem.
