Connection problem with Verizon DSL

Nov 10, 2008 3:19PM PST

I am having connection problems in Claremont, CA since two weeks ago, which is becoming very frustrating. It almost always happens in the evenings, between 8 to 11. What happens is that the internet light on the Speedstream 6100F would start flashing and then goes out completely. It then comes back on after anywhere between 30 seconds to more than 10 minutes. Verizon did the line check and told me that they did not detect any problem with the connection. They also sent me a new modem, which didn't help at all. I tried connecting the modem directly to the computer without the wireless router, and it didn't eliminate the connection problem either. I wasted more than five hours and several evenings on this with tech support and they would not even want to send a technician out. Before I moved here I had AT&T DSL and it never had a problem. When I moved here I was told that AT&T did not serve our house so I had to get Verizon. However, I checked today and found that AT&T is actually serving our address now (I still have to confirm this with a phone call). So unless there is a quick fix to the problem, I would take the easy way out - switching to another company altogether. Has anyone else had this experience, in particular, anyone in the Claremont or Southern Cal area?

I'm repairing my connection all the time

See "help" for instructions first.

Disconnect all wiring from the system, let stand disconnected for 30 seconds. then plug it back in (loose connection).

Reset the modem. Turn it off then on again (will reboot the connection).

Disable then, enable your adapter in "network and sharing center" (reboot adapter).

Update your adapter driver (driver out of date).

Run diagnostics for connectivity (other problems).

Before you continue to the next steps ask some one there, where you are, to assist you.

Working with your IP reestablish your E-mail service (improper setting in E-mail). This one can be a major head ache.

Thou new the modem may still be bad. Return it.

Ethernet cable is bad, replace it($10.00).

There is also the possibility your adapter has gone bad. If you replace it get one that has 10/100/1000 capabilities and has 1GB+ of memory ($60.00 or less).

There are no easy fixes for these connectivity problems. If this is your first problem with connectivity you have been very lucky. Unfortunately this also means your inexperienced with repairing them. Be patient and learn.

I am in the Rowland Heights area.

I am experiencing the same problem with netzero but that's probably because netzero is leasing their lines from verizon (I am guessing). My feeling on this is we won't have good DSL until FiOS gets to our area.

As for DirecTV, those good deal are for new customer only (which would leave me out). Actually I have cable in my area. I had them at one time (Adelphia then) and they were pretty good too; except now I have a big dispute with them (so no cable).
