Question

Connection Drops

Jul 28, 2016 10:41PM PDT

Hi this is my first time asking something on the internet so please be patient.

So i have this issue that my connection randomly dropping. I have a router WRVS4400N Wireless-N. I did some work to figure out what is causing the problem here is what i already did and know:

- It's not about wireless (connected through ethernet port same thing ((no internet)))
- When the internet is of i can access router (192.168......) without any problems and the local network is working (i tried to print documents when internet was down and they worked perfectly)
- I switched lan cables connecting router and modem no effect though
- It's not the computer.
- I connected computer directly to modem, I noticed that internet on router is slower by 10mb/s even when I was connected through ethernet port

I am beginning to think that modem might be causing problems but i want to make sure if it's not the router.
I want to add that nothing is mine I just want to fix it for my lets call her friend (about this 10mb/s dropdown on router I was shocked she has such a fast internet)

Hope u guyz can help me and thanks in advance.

ps: English is my 2nd language so sorry for any mistakes made.

Answer
extra info

I checked power levels on modem downstream and upstream and they are both normal
downstream -2-(-1)
upstream 46-50

For power levels you talk to your ISP about that.

I find that varies with the ISP so what's normal here may not apply to your setup.

As presented in your post it sounds like a ISP issue.

sure

I just want to make sure if it's not the router. I called my ISP today and they stand that everything is working perfectly fine (yeah sure). So just to make sure am gonna go and buy a router at Walmart and check if the problem still occurs, I think that we'll have to do it anyway because of this 10mb/s dropdown (I checked on the internet and they stopped manufacturing our router in 2008 and cancelled all support in 2010 so it's pretty old).

Thanks for fast reply keep you updated.

And you can test that!

Since you are wired you can plug your PC directly into the modem, then boot the modem, wait for it to finish then boot your PC and test.

Remember that ISPs are known to report "all is well" when their system has crashed a few times today. They are probably right that it's OK at the time of the call.

I've already done it

Like I said (thats why i was so shocked about internet speed) anyway I am back from the store and I managed to connect new modem router (yeah i took both but replacing modem with new one oh I have no words I was on the phone for like a 30 min) and it looks like the problem is fixed. I' ll have to wait and check if any kind of dropout occurs.

Keep you updated

And to cover an issue.

If you run TORRENTS then dropouts seem to follow those users. They gripe, scream and pound fists about that.
