Connection dropping 2wire modem.

Jan 11, 2009 1:33AM PST

Ok I have a 2wire 2701HG-B from bellsouth. I have had it for around ten months and when I first I got it, for two to three months everything was fine. Then it suddenly starting dropping the connection at random times, sometimes every 2-3 minutes, sometimes only once every few hours. I have since called bellsouth, to no avail, followed everything in every forum I could find, and no matter what, it still happens. I know back when I had Hughesnet, even though I would drop my link, like in heavy rain, my router would still be connected to my computer and I would get the little or no connectivity message. I have two computers, a new 13 AL MB, and a Vaio. My brother also has a Vaio, and he sees the same results. Fed up, I have now connected my MB to the router via an ethernet cable, and everything is fine. What the heck is wrong? Would I be better to simply go buy a router and connect that router to my 2Wire, and connect to that router's signal rather than the 2Wire? I have never seen one router give so many people so much trouble as the 2Wire router seems to. Any out of the ordinary advice about this or that would be appreciated, as I have tried everything. And also if anyone has had any luck connecting a wireless router to the 2Wire and getting better results.

Ok, did you try it per our forum suggestions?

1. Router (2wire...) defaults.
2. SSID broadcasting.
3. WPA security.

As to the secound router. We cover that in post 17 of our forum sticky.

I have tried the defaults.
I have tried defaults with SSID both enabled and disabled, and also tried different encrytions with SSID both enabled and disabled. Same problem all the time. Connects, sometimes for hours with no problems, sometimes lasting only minutes before going out and then resetting, starting back up and it going right back out.
I have found the posts on using two routers, and I think I will go this route, as my ethernet never fails, only my wireless.

Thanks.
