Connecting via DSL in another state

Aug 11, 2007 12:48AM PDT

I should know this, but I'm stumped. I'm trying to connect my Mac laptop to a DSL cable in another state (writing this from Montana and home is Burbank, CA), and I'm posting this question from a PC that is configured to run at this location. How do I configure my Mac laptop to connect to the internet using a DSL with another service provider? I've poked around the Network settings inside system preferences but I haven't been able to get any setting to work.

Is this a hotel, office, or someone's house?

Do you need or have you been provided a wep key?

Need just a bit more info here to be of any help.

Connecting DSL

Most DSL connections are using PPPOE which requires a username and password to be provided on connection.
If the PC is the only machine on this DSL and is directly connected to the modem, you will need to set up your machine for PPPOE and supply the correct username and password for the DSL account.
A way around this is to connect the modem to a router and configure the router to connect using PPPOE with the necessary information.
All computers then connect to the router using TCP/IP and receive their IP addresses from the router.

I realize I might be out on a limb here but every DSL line I have seen has been PPPOE.

Hope this helps you get on-line.

Thanks all for the info

I've been away all day at Yellowstone, so I'm now back reading the responses. First, I'm at a house. My brother's PC is connected to a modem only, no router. I'll try messing with some of the settings suggested and see what happens. I'm only here one more day, so no biggie. Thanks for the input.
