Question

Connecting Samsung TV with Sony Wireless Headphone

Oct 25, 2017 8:16AM PDT

Hi all,
I have a Samsung UN55KU6500FXZC.
Last week I got myself a Sony MDR RF995RK wireless headphone.
Because the TV does not have a headphone jack, after some research, including in this forum, I got a digital to analog converter. I plugged one end of the Toslink cable into the digital audio output of the TV, and the other end to the converter. I also got a mini 3.5 to 2 RCA, and connected the two plugs into the appropriate plugs of the converter and the other end to the 3.5 mm jack of the wireless headphone base.
Set the sound output of the TV to digital audio.
Still no sound. I have adjusted the channels, tuning etc., but no sound.
The headphone works with my cellphone so it does work.
I also chatted with Samsung Canada Helpdesk and they would only say I need a converter but did not know what type of converter.
So, what am I doing wrong here?
Any tip will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

I can't find which converter was used.

Some don't like 5.1 audio. So in the TV we not only set Digital Optical but set the audio to PCM or Stereo (the menus do not follow any standard so I note this and have everyone figure it out or do the old Find Waldo as to where it is.)

I worry the converter is not able to process 5.1 audio or is not turned on or powered up. I've lost count of the times the power was not connected to these converters.

Did you ever get this to work? If so, please let me know what you did.

Converter versus DECODER
Apr 22, 2018 8:11AM PDT

In stumbling around on the internet, I cam across what looks like an answer---to use a DECODER instead of a CONVERTER. Apparently, DECODERS are able to to translate the more current formats used on some TV's for streaming. My old converter works fine for broadcast audio; streaming audio does not work with the converter. Have ordered a DECODER and will know shortly if that does the trick.

UPDATE: DECODER I received does not work on broadcast or streaming channels despite all sorts of gymnastics to change settings on the TV sound system. So much for wordsmithing solutions.

- Does the converter work on another device where it's proven that digital sound works, because it's connected that way to some digital sound system?
- Do you get sound if you connect to a digital sound system in stead of this connector?

Resolved it

So, I have to make an embarrassing confession.

While fiddling with the various inputs and outputs, I also decided to fiddle with the jacks of the Toslink cable and realized that they do come with a thin and transparent cover which has to be removed!
I removed it and then still had to set the audio to PCM and voila, it works.

Thank you so much!!!

That's another common optical cable gotcha.

PCM to some is perchance magic, but needed on many of these converters.
