Connecting PC to TV

by twmd / January 29, 2009 9:28 PM PST

Looking for a way to connect my PC to an LCDTV so the PC will function as a DVR. Want to connect the PC next to the TV for ease of use. The PC is running WinXP SP3, 2GHz Pentium CPU, 2Gb RAM, DVI video out and Netgear G-NIC card. Do not have tuner card but can install one.

Another PC in another room is running Win Vista, 3Ghz Core 2 Duo CPU, 8Gb RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8500 GT video card, NVIDIA nForce NIC card and Hauppauge WinTV HVR-1800 TV tuner. This computer might be the better PC to connect but it will be in another room and not as convenient to use. Most articles about connecting a PC to a TV I found on-line are very basic and are about using a TV as a monitor.

does the TV have?

I don't think there's much difference between using the TV as a monitor for, say, browsing the net or for viewing, say, a DVD or a TV signal from your cable.

The TV is a Samsung LN46A650. It has a LAN connector but not sure at this point if it is in or out. Don't simply want to surf the internet using the TV as a monitor. Want to be able to record programs to the PC HD. The cable box has a variety of outputs, including HDMI, USB, COAX and DVI. I think using the cable box as a video source and link it to a tuner card in the PC would work.
