Connecting PC to Samsung 40inch LCD issues

Dec 23, 2008 6:27AM PST

TV Model: LNT4061FX/XAA
Version: CN06

I currently am running my newly built PC to my Samsung TV. The problem I am having is it works VERY inconsistently. Sometimes, it displays the PC BIOS, to log in, and actual logging in. Sometimes it display the PC BIOS, to actually booting into Vista, but then it will drop the signal and display "low or weak" signal. Most of the time, it will not display anything at all except "low or weak" signal. The frustrating thing about this is it is intermittent.

I verified it was not in shop mode, per this forum. The "just scan" and "wide fit" options are greyed out. Which I understand needs to meet a signal req to be available as an option. Having said that the video card being used is an EVGA GTX260 with DVI to HDMI adaptor, using a 1.3 HDMI cable that was being used for my cable tv (was working fine).

I am pretty much at wit's end trying to figure this out, if I could "force" it into "just scan" mode I am sure it would work. The OS I am using is Vista 64 Premium.

Thanks in advance for your help

Detecting?
Dec 23, 2008 6:56AM PST

When you open your display properties, do you see it as a connected device?

Often times the output ports will engage on startup, and then disengage as Windows loads the current drivers.

Here are my suggestions:

1. Update your BIOS
2. Update your video card drivers
3. Check to see if it detects it.
4. Toggle your video out (often Fn+F7/6/8/etc.

If that doesn't work, you might try calling tech support to see what resolutions you can come up with.

Keep me posted.

I tried also to use the VGA adapter using a HDMI to VGA connection, and while it will detect the signal by allowing me to switch to PC mode, it still displays "Weak or no" signal, sometimes displaying "not supported mode".

Last thing, my XBOX360 and my HD Cable box run off the same HDMI1 port with no problems at all.

I will have to check the BIOS version, but I know the video card has the most up to date drivers from Nvidea themselves.

Just additional info.

Update
Dec 23, 2008 8:22AM PST

I called Samsung support, got level 2, and apparently they are stumped. So it is being escalated, but wont here anything until after Christmas since they are off (completely understandable). I wish I could figure this out, really eats at me since it works sometimes, but not all the time. I will keep you posted on if there was a fix for this.

A few more ideas..
Dec 23, 2008 8:43AM PST

Well, let's see if we can get this running in the meantime.

Is there a toggle to switch to the video output source in the computer? You might try bumping your resolution to 1920x1080 or lower if it isn't already (but not too low!). See if any of those resolutions produces a signal that the television can work with.

Do you have all 15 pins in your VGA cable available?

Do you have additional scaling turned off or at 0% in the laptop?

It is a desktop, not a laptop. Just make sure we are one the same page ;p

I hate even mentioning this, because I am an IT professional myself, and if a user mentioned this to me I would smirk. Here goes anyways:

The BIOS screen and post + the vista loading bar display in 800X600 I believe. If I wiggle the HDMI cables, I have tried two different ones so far, I can *occasionally* get it to display all of the above, which allows me to F8 into safe mode. Once in safe mode, I cant really fiddle with the display settings as it only loads the onboard vid drivers, not nvidea, so I cant adjust the resolution.

Note to the above, more times than not, I cant even get it to display the BIOS, post, and Vista loading bar. It may just be dumb luck that me fiddling with the cables makes it work enough to where I can boot into safe mode. Problem is, if I can ever get it back into safe mode (been messing with it for the better part of 20 mins, my luck may have run out), I am not sure what to do to perma adjust the resolution.

Also, the Samsung tech told me they do not support DVI to VGA adaptors for the TVs, but the do apparently support DVI to HDMI. I have never used the VGA adaptor for the particular PC as I prefer to send it through a true HD signal since I have a Blu Ray player in my PC. Currently and for the week it worked (however inconsistently) I have been using HDMI. I also run audio (non HD 2.0 AKA SPDIF) through my vid card, which in turn runs in through the HDMI cable. That is my main reason for using HDMI. The GTX 260 doesnt offer any straight through VGA ports, only dual DVI ports.

Wish this message board had an edit button, I hate spamming you guys with more info.

Anywho, got into the safe mode option menu twice after countless attempts to reboot to display anything at all. I tried to set the resolution to lowest possible 640X480 or something close, didnt work. Went into safe mode on the second attempt, which it boots into Vista just fine when I do, uninstalled the Nvidea drivers completely. Since then I have had no luck getting anything to display at all.

Will keep you posted. I am beginning to think something has to be wrong with the TV to have an intermittent problem like this. Either way I have created a little work for myself to reinstall the vid card drivers =)

HDCP?
Dec 23, 2008 9:50AM PST

Here's something that may keep it from working...

Is that video card HDCP compliant?

(Don't worry about the multiple posts. Happens to me all the time!) Happy

HDMI vs. DVI
Dec 23, 2008 10:02AM PST

I can't help but think there is something that isn't translating correctly. (Cap't Obvious, right?) Happy But it's got to be something simple.

There is a HDMI/DVI port in the back of the television. My network here is down, but I believe it's port #2, and physically says HDMI/DVI for those specific applications.

This has me stumped, and when that happens, I can't let go of it. I'll noodle on this for a bit and see what I can come up with while you reinstall drivers.

OK I reinstalled the drivers, the only other point of failure (after going over everything I have done, as far as tracking possible points of failure) is the actually HDMI/DVI convertor in the back of my PC (connected to the DVI port on my vid card).

Was able to reinstall the drivers to my vid card, no success there, but I wll hit up Altex tomorrow and see if I can get another convertor. Again, thanks for helping on this, much appreciated.

HDMI2
Dec 23, 2008 10:41AM PST

I tried this port, and hurray, I cant 95% get it to show me the BIOS, post, and Vista booting bar. Only problem is it goes into "weak or no" signal after it goes to the Vista log in screen.

This time I do have the option of "Just scan" and/or "wide fit", but messing with those doesnt change much. SO we have progress, but still have display issues past the Vista boot bar.
