Question

connecting old coaxial tv to cable box and jvc recorder

Aug 22, 2015 1:58PM PDT

After upgrading cable box to hd (couldn't receive all channels on standard cable box) I am able to view the picture from cable box but can't bring up menu for jvc recorder. Another cable configuration allows me to bring up the jvc menu but I have no picture from cable box only "no signal" flashing across tv screen.
TV has only one coaxial output (it was for the antenna. I used a rf modulator with the old cable box but same cable configuration doesn't work with new box. I have also called jvc and they were unable to help only telling me I had to purchase a new tv. Thank you

Answer
All true. It's a mess.

Your cable system is now HD and the JVC is not. So the no signal is correct as their is nothing for it to lock onto.

I'm missing a lot of detail here but it sounds like this unknown JVC recorder is from pre-HD days and as such is no longer useful.

These old 'hybrid' jvc DECKS ARE ODD

They offer HDMI, but the manual indicates that if you use the HDMI output, you are limited to 480p. Sort of defeats the purpose, other than the added benefit of being able to use a single cable for both audio/video. <shrug>. And since you are using VHS TAPES/dvdS, ONLY SD would be available to you, not hd RECORDING PER SE.

See here (p.16)-
LInk to jvc manual<br>

Also, the cable box is configured (USING 5C encryption) TO RESTRICT THE ABILITY TO RECORD MOST CONTENT FREELY.

change cable box ?
Aug 26, 2015 3:36AM PDT

If I change to standard cable box (least expensive route) how would I hook up the cables and would this work ? I changed to hd because standard box dropped channels. Or bite the bullet and purchase a hd dvd recorder - any recommendations ? Thank you

I think those will fail too. Why?

Almost all the HD content is moved via HDMI which is protected. Look into HDMI recorders and you find nothing that gives you back what you had before.

The industry has worked very hard to lock down HD content. To record from cable is now a minefield with a lot of barbwire.

Got it to work - THX

I used the following configuration - rf modulator must have been quirky

JVC
Red-yellow-white (input shaded in black) - - -> red-yellow-white on cable box
Red-yellow-white (not shaded) - - -> red-yellow-white on rf modulator
Coaxial out - - - > “to tv” on rf modulator
Coaxial in - - - > cable box “to tv”

RF Modulator
Coaxial “antenna” - - - > to single coaxial ouput on tv

NOW - I tried to record a public station and it said it was copy written - is there a work around for pbs stations?

What tv do you have? Why did you upgrade the box to HD. if you don't have an HDTV?
