connecting new laptop(XP) to desktop(XP)

Sep 29, 2004 1:47PM PDT

I want to transfer files between my new laptop and my home desktop. I thought by plugging firewire between them would work but I can't find either under the "my PC' file. Help please.

I have found firewire to be problematic. Try ethernet.

Purchase a crossover cable, attach to the NIC ports (will look like a large phone plug) and run the network wizard on your PC.

If you are on Cable or DSL and your modem supports connection with USB, use this connection for Internet access. You do not have to make the PC an ICS server. ICS (internet connection sharing) is harder to set-up and not nessary for your intended use.

This will network the two systems together allowing you to transfer your files.

firewire networking is not automatic. you buy a crossover cable to connect your laptop to your desktop and make sure you turn on sharing for both computers c: hard drives
my computer -> right click c: drive -> click sharing
-> enable sharing -> click the understand sharing .... and enable full read write priveleges.
