Connecting laptops

I have a laptop in which the monitor no longer works. I was told that opening and closing the laptop apparently severed the cable to the monitor and it would cost more than it was worth to repair. I have a new laptop now and am wondering if it is possible to connect the two laptops so I can access the one with the broken monitor with my new one. If not is there anyway to hook the broken laptop to an external monitor so I can move the files off of it?

From connection of an external display that sometimes works to the solid iron clad method of putting the old laptop drive in some USB case. Here's a no tool case I own.
