" i understand that both the tv and blu-ray can connect to a laptop wirelessly but am struggling to figure out how to do this? "
Don't you mean "to the internet"?
I'm finding folk that want to do things but are not clear what they really wantted to do. I read where you want the yahoo widget so let's skip the laptop since it's not where the widget or the internet is for now.
http://www.techradar.com/reviews/audio-visual/televisions/plasma-and-lcd-tvs/samsung-le40b651-593001/review shows it does have the capability so think over how you connect the internet to the TV rather than your laptop.
Yes, about any router will do. What do you have now?
