connecting external pc speakers to an hdtv

I just hooked up an rca hdtv to my pc with an hdmi cable to use as a monitor. Everything works just fine but I want to use my external pc speakers instead of the tvs. I've hooked the speakers to pc but the sound still comes out of the tv. Any suggestions?

Sounds to me like . . .

you need to investigate the audio settings on the PC. But it's probably either/or. HDMI or analog audio.
