Question

Connecting 2 laptops wirelessly without internet for gaming

Mar 19, 2020 10:45AM PDT

I want to game with someone without using the internet using local server multiplayer, we are both running windows 10 and I have tried some tutorials and none work. I basically want a wireless LAN connection. How do I do this on windows 10?

I cannot follow the tutorials because I do not see the ad hoc option once I get to that step.

Sharing wifi?
Mar 19, 2020 11:41AM PDT

Does this work by sharing an existing wifi connection? Because that will not work neither PC can be connected to the outside world with internet. I need a completely self contained connection between the 2 PCs.

I can't help here. We know that we can setup Windows (almost any version) as a router that does not have to have an Internet connection.

But this will challenge those that need a step by step (the link I supplied was close enough for me) or folk that can't configure IP addresses.

-> For those that can't configure Windows, I do have another solution. Buy a router. A router does NOT have to have an internet connection and can create a LAN of both wired and wireless.

...some computers are Bluetooth enabled. If yours is not, you can buy a Bluetooth USB stick to enable it. While I don't have the technical experience in setting up such connections for what the OP is asking, I thought it might be an alternative option as long as the 2 computers are nearby, within Bluetooth range.

That's harder than the Windows as a router setup.

I'm a bit more into Bluetooth than some as the office apps use Bluetooth's Serial Port Profile. This meant the team learned so much about Bluetooth along the way but Bluetooth's PAN system is terrible. Also BLE doesn’t natively communicate with IP so you are out there with a sore head after banging in that issue.

Just trying to think outside the box for the OP. Blush

That's good but

You would have to build the box to get outside the box then you find the box is on fire. Then your hose is too short.

Today, I was having trouble due to a physically broken home internet connection. No internet except on my cell phones. I turned on my phone hotspot feature and now connected to my 2 tablets and my home computer via my phone wifi without any trouble. Not sure if the OP tried that method.
