connecting 2 computers together to transfer files

Aug 30, 2004 10:46PM PDT

Hi, I have to reformat my niece's computer because something is wrong with it. I have done a virus scan, ad-aware, spybot, etc and I have found nothing. I think the kids messed it up. Anyway, I want to know the easiest way to save her files. I've read I can just connect the two computers with a wire (cat 5, firewire, somthing) I think through the ethernet card and they will be connected so I can just transfer the files to another computer temp. Both computers are running Windows XP home. Can someone instruct me how to do this? I would appreciate it greatly. Thank you. Jeff

What is a crossover cable? Is that something I can just buy at radioshack? It seems pretty basic after I have that.

A crossover cable is just a slightly rewired ethernet cable. It's marked as such and used when you want to connect from ethernet card to ethernet card.
