To get VGA to composite the video mode may have to be 640x480. Frankly with the cost of a monitor under the price of those adapters why do this?

I connected old analog TV that has composite connection to a Dell Vostro 1000 laptop that has a VGA connection. I am using a VGA to video converter adapter. I have sound but no picture. When I turn everything on the laptop and TV screens show boxes made out of colored lines for a second then both screens go black and then the laptop screen shows the picture but the TV screen stays black. The laptop does not have an expresscard. Will that make a difference? If so what kind of express card do I need? This set up is just for the kids to watch movies.
