Connect to the Internet via my cell phone using dialup

Jan 28, 2009 4:35PM PST

1. My cellphone is attached to my laptop with a USB cable
2. I setup my cell as DEFAULT MODEM COM
3. Setup my dialup connection and selected: Modem Motorola USB (COM6)

As soon as the modem start to dial my ISP number I got the following message:Dialing 541-9564028,,,

Error 678: The remote computer did not respond.
For further assistance, click More Info or search
Help and Support Center for this error number.

Is that because US-Cellurar does not provide this type of connection?

Any Idea?

you should check if us cellurar offers/ supports internet usage on the phone. if they do, you might have to pay them to "allow" your phone to be a modem even though it can quite easily do it without them. i had to pay for the data access line in my phone to get it to work. i have t mobile, with a sony ericsson phone, and bought the $10 net access on the phone. then after i was able to connect. it's a capped usuage but it's not the large data plans. hope this helps

dial up via mobile as voice call possible?
Apr 14, 2013 12:22PM PDT

How can a mobile phone dial up internet access be treated as a voice call rather than a data call? The reason I ask this is because if numbers are on the same CUG (closed user group which allows for unlimited calls) which includes the ISP number?

If you find a cellular phone with a builtin fax modem. These are so rare that you would know if your phone has such.

There are some that claim they know about this area so be sure to have them supply the exact model and specs because I've seen too many folk flame out here.

Ok Bob. What I want to know is if dial up internet access via mobile or USB dongle is treated as a data call or a voice call. What gets used up?

Dial up over cellular uses talk minutes.

But it's so rare and it's been a decade since I saw this happen. It's also usually slow. About 9600 BAUD.

Most folk will not use it.
