Connect laptop to HDTV ... no sound

Jan 17, 2008 1:10AM PST

I am trying to connect my laptop to our HDTV using an HDMI cord. I get a picture but no sound. Doesn't the HDMI cord carry both?

Is there another way to get sound to the TV? Thanks.

Laptop: Gateway P-6825 Notebook PC
TV: Sharp Aquos 32-inch

Does Gateway tell you how to route sound to HDMI?

It's far from automatic and in most cases you'll see video over HDMI and the sound is via the PC's sound card.

Not running any HD content. Just want to get video and slide shows (with sound) to play over the TV.

I can go under sounds in my control panel it says sound via HDMI is working. The test even sends a tone through the TV. Thus the confusion.

Some of the media players will only pipe through the pc sound system. Are you seeing our words in red?

These are the words in red.

I can't answer your last question. Either I don't know or I can't know since your posts are "light." I noted it could be a media player setting but you don't share which you use. Since you can't see our words in red, here's the copy and please report in FORUM FEEDBACK that they don't show for you.

Note: If you're asking for technical help, please be sure to include all your system info, including operating system, model number, and any other specifics related to the problem. Also please exercise your best judgment when posting in the forums--revealing personal information such as your e-mail address, telephone number, and address is not recommended.

using the Netflix viedo player. I get a picture, but no sound. You already knew that, though.

I am using Input 4 on my TV, which is set aside for HDMI. So is Input 5. Neither has a seperate spot for audio.

Input 6 is for PC and uses some 15-prong adapter thing. I don't have one of those. There's also a seperate audio spot under Input 6. ... I also have a spot for S-Viedo.

I thought using the HDMI cord would be easiest, since it carries both video and audio.

That's a key element but read this SONY SETUP article.

Well, that's not obvious. Remember I didn't check with Gateway.com for such an article.

but that was to be expected. I will again read through the Gateway handbook that came with the laptop to see if I can better understand the connection(s).

RE: Audio for HDMI
Jul 14, 2009 2:05PM PDT

Down at the bottom of your screen right click on the volume icon click on playback devices this will open a secondary window. You should now see your Laptop Speaker as well as the HDMI port. Right click on the Laptop sound in the Playback Tab and disable. You will need to reenable this once you are done using your HDMI output. Then you will most likely need to restart the program that you would like to receive audio from. This will now utilize the HDMI cable as it is the only option currently available. Hopefully this will work for you, there may need to be a variation of this fix which is based on Microsoft Vista using a Vaio Laptop.

That's the problem

I'm going to write that while I've fixed this on dozens of laptops the menus and settings must be in some dozens of different places.

It's a shame it wasn't easier. But if your software player is good (7 Starter Edition is just so bad we can't write another word about it) then you fish around for the place to pipe the sound over HDMI.

JB2012 ? Are you JB2012 ?
Nov 29, 2009 4:53AM PST

Sorry I missed it if you jumped into JB2012's discussion. The make and models matter but I apologize I missed the new member jumping into a prior discussion.

If the audio drops out it could be another issue I run into. To test this is NOT FUN FOR SOME. Fun for me as I try it on another HDMI HDTV set. Here it is. Ready?

HDMI is a minefield of HDCP (google that!) "High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection" which is just sad to say does not work all the time. In fact I think they are proud at how it works and you see stories like yours and then my successes by changing to component cable, DVI, and other sets.

I'm lucky that I've seen this too many times and don't have to deal with customer issues like this. Those that sold this stuff deserve all the ire.

Having same problem
Dec 5, 2009 8:54PM PST

Bought Dynex 32 from Best Buy (I'm working-class). Tried to connect sound on both Compaq laptop (VISTA) and Dell netbook w/HDMI (XP) -- nada.

Have BB warranty; new Dynex chip installed. Did not work.

Have been all over laptops -- just will not work. Have given up -- using boom-box for sound.

Very insane.

BTW: video is GREAT!
