Question

Connect camcorder to laptop

Oct 23, 2018 3:04AM PDT

Hello everyone:
I have this laptop: Asus strix gl703gm (https://tinyurl.com/y7ov85zu)
And a camcorder of this model: panasonic ag-ac130ap. The video camera has a port DV out, but the laptop does not have a DV port.

Anyone have a solution How do I connect the camcorder to my laptop?

Most laptops don't have the option to add a port.

So find a desktop to put a PCI-E card with the right port in, or find a friend that has one (I think they are native on a Mac). Use that device to transfer the video you made to a USB-stick or external disk and copy it from their to your laptop.

My problem is not to download the movie to my laptop, but to do live streaming (Etc. Facebook Live)

DV port is usually firewire.

So let's begin with there is NO SUCH THING as an USB to Firewire cable. Sure you can see them for sale but no one reports they work outside of those that sell them. I will not give more time to this dead end.

There was an old capture box from DV to USB but it is rare, so rare. Hardly worth mentioning.

Since DV Firewire is getting more and more rare the fix for portable Firewire use is to find a laptop with the needed port.

Buy new laptop????

The laptop cost me nearly 2000$.......
Instead of looking for or buying an old laptop with the appropriate connection, there is no other solution, such as an adapter or something like that?

No doubt that's a perfect laptop for gaming. But not for you.
It's like buying a Ferrari when you need a pickup truck.

https://www.asus.com/Laptops/ROG-G703/Tech-Specs/ tells what I/O-ports it has. And seems it doesn't have what you want. See if you can sell it for a good price, and then buy one that does what you need.
Or buy a compatible camcorder and enjoy gaming on your laptop also.

It's a bit strange that such a powerful laptop does not have a simple solution. Thank you anyway for your answer but one more question: Does the Thunderbolt port have no ideal solution?

https://www.apple.com/shop/product/MD464LL/A/apple-thunderbolt-to-firewire-adapter is an adapter, but it's for Apple and for the other direction: thunderbold out and firewire in, while powering the firewire device.

If you can find the right adapter, try it. But I have my doubts.

Powerful, in this case, is specialised. Like the powerful Ferrari that are fine on the racing track but not for carrying stuff, however expensive they are.

Here we keep a few old laptops around for reasons like this. We have one last desktop since adding a firewire card is a 10 buck fix.

In your case you might want to remain mobile so I did the homework for you to find a cheap firewire and i5 or better laptop. Also, my brother and I have a few models from Groupon and along with Newegg it seems that is where we go for laptops for his insurance office.

Yes, we are cheap (wild and crazy) guys.
