Congratulations Brian...you FINALLY review a Porsche

Apr 7, 2008 11:27PM PDT

Break out the champagne glasses?

Sure did take long enough. Considering all the other expensive iron you all @ CNET have been courting and bandying about in, it seemed really amiss to not cover a car and make that seems to be a staple plaything in any tech company's executive parking lot...well, at least those who've made it.

Also very comforting to see and hear that you DO get it. Although your review went a little light on the actual car tech driving systems (that's what Road & Track and Excellence are for, I suppose), at least it's heartening to see that you didn't get all hung up on the cabin tech.

All is not lost @ CNET Automotive, after all. Keep it up and I'll finally have to consider you guys legit. Wink

Thanks. The written review, which will post today, goes into more detail on the Porsche 911's driving tech.

We have previously reviewed a couple of cars with Porsche badges, although their pedigrees can be questioned:
2008 Porsche Cayenne Turbo

2007 Porsche Boxster S

And we've got a couple more impressive rides in the garage right now, for which we should have reviews up late next week. Stay tuned.

Sorry...I missed the Boxster S review.
Apr 8, 2008 3:52PM PDT

Must've been on one of those weeks that I was traveling.

Wayne, I think we can cut the Boxster some slack. After all, it's not like a mid-engine car is an alien thing to Zuffenhausen. Although I admit I liked the styling of the original concept Boxster a LOT more than what its bloated proportions (relatively speaking) ended up being.

As for the Cayenne...well, for a while there it was a cash cow for the company. And no, I don't consider it a true Porsche. Real...well, it's a sign of our times, so yes it's a real Porsche. Just not one that's true to its own heritage or the founder's--and his son's--automotive vision.

Though when it's all said and done...there's still only the Nine-One-One, and I'm glad you guys finally got around to reviewing one version of the quintessential Porsche. Even if it's no longer air-cooled (guess that spells out where MY allegiance really and ultimately lies, stupendous, confidence-inspiring Cayman S performance notwithstanding). And that I would've been more curious over your take on a creature like the GT3 RS, rather than the cushier C4S...

Well, ya gotta start somewhere, I suppose. Congrats, anyways.
