Confused with various scanners

Oct 10, 2008 8:25PM PDT

Gateway 128mb ram WinME, 7yrs old.

First, I had Spybot TeaTimer running, did my spybot scans, everything bascially ok, less the tracking cookies it found. Just this morning I ran it again and it locked up at virtumonde.dll. Had to ctr-alt-del to end program. When I did, I got the blue screen with this message:

File Name : VWIN32(05) + 000012D0 Error: 0E : 0028 : C029A48

I googled and it appeared I had the virtumonde trojan. I turned of TeaTimer, scanned again, no sign of virtumonde, just tracking cookies.
So now I don't use TeaTimer.

I tried A-Squared scanner, only tracking cookies. Symantec, no viruses. PC Flank scanners, everything ok. Spyware Doctor don't work with ME. Tried Spyware Hunter, found ZLOB and another I failed to write down, but no virtumonde. I downloaded SuperAntiSpyware, found nothing. I've left it running in the background, that spider thingy. Or should I just go back to TeaTimer?

I currently use Avast Free, fully updated, it too found no viruses. I have an old version of zone alarm, 6.0.667. I use CCleaner daily.

It just seems like the free scans find zilch, but the trial ware tends to find more. That's where I get confused. Am I really infected? I just downloaded Trojan Hunter, will try that and see what pops up or not.

I recently purchased a Dell Vista and bought Spyware Doctor 09 and Zone Alarm Suite 2009. But with all these sudden scares I've gotten, I don't dare put it online. Kinda defeats the purpose of a new computer I guess.

Guess that about covers it, sorry if I got winded. I like a chat room in Maine 2, and what some ppl say they can do to my computer and have already done, well, it just makes me want to just use this old computer instead.

Thanks for any advice you may provide
Fred

Super AntiSpyware also runs on winme........

Give that also a try:

Download and scan with SUPERAntiSpyware Free for Home Users

* Double-click SUPERAntiSpyware.exe and use the default settings for installation.
* An icon will be created on your desktop. Double-click that icon to launch the program.
* If asked to update the program definitions, click "Yes". If not, update the definitions before scanning by selecting "Check for Updates". (If you encounter any problems while downloading the updates, manually download and unzip them from here.)
* Under "Configuration and Preferences", click the Preferences button.
* Click the Scanning Control tab.
* Under Scanner Options make sure the following are checked (leave all others unchecked):

Close browsers before scanning.
Scan for tracking cookies.
Terminate memory threats before quarantining.

* Click the "Close" button to leave the control center screen.
* Back on the main screen, under "Scan for Harmful Software" click Scan your computer.
* On the left, make sure you check C:\Fixed Drive.
* On the right, under "Complete Scan", choose Perform Complete Scan.
* Click "Next" to start the scan. Please be patient while it scans your computer.
* After the scan is complete, a Scan Summary box will appear with potentially harmful items that were detected. Click "OK".
* Make sure everything has a checkmark next to it and click "Next".
* A notification will appear that "Quarantine and Removal is Complete". Click "OK" and then click the "Finish" button to return to the main menu.
* If asked if you want to reboot, click "Yes".

Does it also come up clean?

Fred,

before scanning with any malware scanner, I would suggest to run CCleaner, so it will remove your cookies and the malware scanner can "concentrate" on finding malware Wink

You can configure SAS (SuperAntiSpyware)to scan your computer the way you want - don't forget to update it, as it updates almost daily.

Have a great weekend Wink
