Question

Confused on Windows Live and imap

Aug 27, 2013 11:12AM PDT

There is a lot I don't know so pardon the ignorance.
I use Windows Live mail but my Internet provider is the one that my account is through ....in other words
"Myname@charter.net" is my email address. I guess I don't even quite understand how that works which is part of the question....I like the way it works as my email is always open or directly accessible on my desktop without going off to a web based site for my mail.
Recently I had a problem and when I called the provider they said they no longer support pop3 protocol so made me setup Imap which seems to have only added 2-3 more problems. I can get into those also if someone cares to help so I will wait for a response at this juncture...thanks very much

Confusion with Windows Live email and IMAP qestions.
Aug 28, 2013 4:55AM PDT

Thanks... I read the info in the link but still leaves a lot I don't understand. Back to the question from my first post:

"I use Windows Live mail but my Internet provider is the one that my account is through ....in other words
"Myname@charter.net" is my email address. I guess I don't even quite understand how that works ....

So if I didn't have another way of following my email, I would have to go to my internet provider's web site and login each time to view any mail there at their server ?

Since I use the Windows Live email "application" ??? on my desktop PC, I can always have a dedicated place to click on to bring up my email program and do whatever from there.... this seems to work most simply and quickly for me. But.... since my email address contains the provider's name rather than "live" or "hotmail" for example, what is the relationship between the provider and my Windows Live email application? Is that still considered using a "3rd party" email method? With the Windows Live on my computer, isn't it an application, or program for that matter, so it is different from say a Yahoo or GMail email system.....

Sorry for making this complicated but I would just like to get the overall picture of the relationship in this scheme I'm using for email.... who provides what and how is it accessed ... and what can I expect from each or how else could things be set up.

I do notice now that since I've been put on an IMAP protocol, I no longer can tell when someone has already viewed new emails. If my wife has checked email and clicked on the header (I have it set for new, unread ones, to have the type in bold until clicked) and I go to my iPad at another time of the day to check for new email, all new ones will already appear as read... type is no longer bold. This makes it harder to spot the new messages so I have to closely look for them rather than have them be apparent with bold type as before. With the POP3 system, it wouldn't matter which computer had checked new email, the other would still show them in bold until also read.

Any thoughts on these questions? Thanks! BTW I am using an HP 110 desktop with the AMD Phenom IIX4 925 @ 2.8Gig 64 bit and 8Gig RAM running Windows 7 Home SP1

1. I no longer can tell when someone has already viewed new emails.

TRUE! In fact since my email on my PC is set up to never send back a read receipt.

1a. Since I have my system setup to never do that step, block it and more, how or why do you expect this to work?
1b. Yes I know about MSGTAG. I fixed that by blocking HTML code and images in emails.
1c. To sum it up. Read receipts or "mail read by recipient is dead."

2. what is the relationship between the provider and my Windows Live email application?

Absolutely nothing. With all email apps we set them up per the email host's instructions.

Let me be very clear here. This setup is between you and your email host. If they fail you, you won't get it setup and it won't work.

3. " IMAP protocol, I no longer can tell when someone has already viewed new emails."

Since IMAP changes the way reading is done, it keeps all our devices in sync.

-> You mention your wife but she should have her own account. Time to fix that issu.

Windows Live mail gives error messages
Aug 28, 2013 12:18PM PDT

I just noticed that when I chose "Delete" for a highlighted message in my "Inbox", an error message comes up saying the "Selected message could not be copied to the destination" . Upon clicking on the details tab, other information says "The selected mailbox does not exist".

When I try to view "Sent" or "Deleted" items, an error message says "Could not select "Sent Items" on the IMAP server. Try refreshing your folder list to syncronize with the IMAP server".
(I don't know how to try to refresh the folder list)

This all came about as part of the required change by my provider to convert to IMAP from pop3. I notice a lot of what seemed to be new email folders showing up on my Windows Live folder list and the same ones on the providers web page of my email account.
I talked to them on the phone to see if I couldn't consolidate and or eliminate some. For example there was a Sent Items, a Sent Mail, a Sent Messages and maybe a Sent e-mail folder. Also similarly there was a Deleted Items and a Deleted messages folder... each folder had different messages... some with many and some with fewer. I had the support person help me combine all the Sent into one folder and tilted it Sent Mail and then eliminate the similar folders. We did the same with the deleted message situation. We also deleted some folders such as PDF, Notes, and a couple others.
Ever since doing this, the above mentioned problem appeared. The support person then backed out of the resposibility of trying to resolve this since he plead innocence and no knowledge of Windows LIve applicaton...
What the heck did we get messed up and how can I restore it to working with only a minimum number of basic folders?

Thanks very much!

That's an issue with Live.

Sorry but I defer to Microsoft's own Live support groups. Use google and you can find that message in the prior discussions.

As to fixing it. I find folk installing Thunderbird and letting Tbird import the old mail and more. Then you have a backup of your stuff. Sorry but this app is not that good. Your posts are proving this again.
