Confused and Not Buying DVD In The Near Futuer

Jan 15, 2006 7:26AM PST

I have been trying to make up my mind about buying a DVD burner to transfer VHS to DVD but after reading about the different formats I have made up my mind to wait. It is too confusing and imagine buying the equipment and then haveing more problems. I was thinking of either buying a box to transfer VHS tapes from analog to digital or buying a capture card to do the job. But the compatibility issues are too overwhelming. So I must wait. Plus I read somewhere where a guy transfered his VHS tapes to DVD and then gave away his VHS collection and now several of his DVD'S will not play anymore. GREAT!

You are just looking for excuse not to do it, aren't you?

Just go out there and get yourself a dvd recorder (+ or - doesn't matter), just be sure to get the same type of dvd media as the recorder you are going to get..that's all. Very simple. Enjoy!

My Approach

Yes, it is daunting. What I would suggest is learn what you can and start doing DVDs for the study and experience. Enjoy it/them as you can. However, since (as you know) the longevity of DVD has still not been proven, do not throw/give away any VHS tapes that still play. If you have a space problem, make DVDs of only your best/most valuable tapes, and keep the tapes.

Good luck.
