confused and looking for a new camera

by charb12 / October 1, 2009 10:18 AM PDT

Im having a blonde moment! I started out with a Pentax SLR, then came children and I went to a point and shoot for ease and quick shots. Last two camera's were Sony's. Started with a DSC-P52 which I LOVed and moved to a Cyber Shot DSC S600-which was a mistake. Picture quality was worse and low light was awful. Need to upgrade. Love creativity and need macro for jewlery business, a low light option better than I had, landscape/travel, architecture, stabelizer, family shots important. Dont know what a big zoom or super zoom is all about. Camera size is not important. Priced at 400 or so? Would look at SLR basic, but not sure. Really love the creativity of using that ol Pentax SLR, but really like the ease of thes point and shoot or whatever? Is there a middle ground? Thank you for your help!

I believe the Canon G11 is now available.
It will be the closest to what you are looking for.

Is that 400 U.S. dollars? If so, that's going to be a bit low even for an entry-level DSLR. Especially if you also need a fast macro lens. ("need macro for jewlery business, a low light option")

How about just picking up a new lens for the Pentax SLR? Or maybe buying something used?

If neither of those options will work, I think you'll be stuck with something like the Canon SX20 or Pany FZ35. So maybe check out some reviews with sample low-light/macro images to see if the image quality will meet your needs.

I think that the previous post is right: Canon G11 is the only camera that fits your search. Otherwise, you are looking at a beginner DSLR and that is not going to be $400 unless you buy used.

SX20 IS

The low-light with the SX10 are no good. Macro (in Super-Macro mode) is stunning.
