I hear good things about Samsung SCH a-670. I think it is better than the LC VX6000. It has an incredible voice activated dialing, without having to 'train'. If you have it stored in your phone book, you can just say the name and it dials. But....both of these phones are 'digital only'.
In the tri-mode category you have Samsung SCH a-650 (no speakerphone) CDM8900 (with a speakerphone but not a good one). I just replaced my wife's CDM8900 with another one after having had it for 10 days. I hope this one is better! The Verizon salesman had a Motorola 710 but he said there are bugs with that phone and thus he could not recommend it. LG VX3200 has a speakerphone.
Your choices are limited in the tri-mode phones.

It's my understanding that analog signals were the original before digital.I'm not positive about this, but I think they aren't as secure as digital either. You can usually get a signal in analog mode IF you can't get a digital signal. That's why it's important to have a phone with more than analog, or digital. For example- I live in Delaware, and when we go to Ocean City, MD- can't get a digital signal on the boardwalk. The phone will switch to analog, if you let it or program it to do that. Usually roaming accompanies it, BUT, if you have to call home or somewhere important, then it's your only option. It's good to have a backup, or plan B in case you need it. Also, text messaging can get thru in case you can't get a voice signal. Hope I explained it well enough.
