conflict with MS updates and my computer

Earlier today I received a message from update manager for windows that new updates were ready to install. After installing the two updates (see below) and rebooting the computer after numerous prompts, I discovered that I could not connect to the Internet using IE 6 although I could using Opera. Since I had just yesterday set a restore point, I went to that method, forgetting that I could probably go through the Control Panel and the Add/Delete programs and delete it there. I didn?t have the numbers but I know that they are listed by date of installation.

I have no idea what caused this to happen, but it is something particular to my computer because my housemate installed the update without any trouble. We both have the same operating system (XP with SP2 plus updates. She uses IE6, though Opera is installed. We both use AVG 8 for our anti-virus and other malware. I use Zone Alarm free firewall program and she uses windows firewall program.

I have selected the option to deselect the two updates with the notice not to notify me again about them.
Hopefully, these updates are not too important. What are your thoughts about that? Information from Microsoft is beyond my level of computer understanding.

That may be the Zone Alarm issue.

Did you uninstall that or try a new version of ZA?

ZA might be a possible culprit

In reply to: That may be the Zone Alarm issue.

Currently I do not have the to newest security updates installed. Zone Alarm was installed on last month and is set for automatic updates. I supposed I could uninstall it, then install windows updates and see if I can then connect to the internet with IE 6. And if so, then reinstall Zone Alarm and see what happens. Do you thin I should do this?

I thought I might uninstall ZA, but when I went out to MS update site I was unable to download that particular update. So I guess I will just have to do without it.
