Configuring a HP dv1000, need help.

Jan 20, 2005 10:03AM PST

I'm buying a dv1000 from the HP site, and currently configuring it, but I'm not sure in som cases...

/When configuring, which Graphics card do I chose?
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2 w/productivity ports
Intel(R) Extreme Graphics 2

/Can you swap/replace the "DVD to DVD/CD-RW Combo Drive" later on, or is it fixed?

/For networknig, which solution do I chose...
Intel(R) Pro/Wireless 2200 802.11BG WLAN
Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG & Bluetooth(TM) +$25.00
54g(TM) Integ. Broadcom 802.11b/g WLAN & Bluetooth +$25.00

Is the 3-year HP Express Repair extended service plan +$179.99 good eough or
should I chose the 2-year HP Accidental Damage Protection with Express Repair extended service plan +$249.99?

Thanks in advance,

Marcel

Wait for Sonoma update if ordering custom .........
Jan 20, 2005 10:21AM PST

I would not order one of these right now as it is not the upgraded Somoma Pentium M Centrino (specification 3) that just came out yesterday..

Nearly all Pentium M models will be upgraded in February and March -- new chipset, new wi-fi card that has a/b/g and less interference, faster RAM, improved integrated video (and improved dedicated video coming soon), faster bus (400mhz to 533mhz), etc.

The only model ready to go right now I am aware of is the Dell 6000 but the HPZT3000 that just disappeared will reportedly reappear as the HPZT4000 which will be Sonoma.

The HPDV1000 series just came out in September but again you should wait for it to be updated...

You will know you have Sonoma if you have a Pentium M cpu ending in a 0 not a 5 -- so the old Pentium M 725 1.6 Dothan is now the Sonoma 730 Pentium M 1.6 Dothan.

If you really like the HPDV1000 now get the retail unit on sale at Costco from Jan 31-February 6th -- passport instant discount of 150 so it is 1299-150= 1149 (DVD burner, Briteview, etc).

Otherwise, if you want to order custom wait for the Sonoma updates ... you should wait just to get the improved integrated video alone that is now on Sonoma.........

Extended warranties under $1500 notebooks not necessary
Jan 20, 2005 10:24AM PST

Also, you should not need an extended warranty for a notebook under $1500 if unless you plan to damage it.

This notebook is only going to have a 2 year useful life anyway with Windows Longhorn 64 -- 64 bit (these notebooks are 32 bit -- get the picture ??) -- by 2007.

Also, if you buy your notebook on an AMEX card or some Visa/Mastercards with warranty doubling (for electronic purchases) you can double your 1 year limited warranty to 2 years limited warranty for free.

That does not cover accidental damage but if you are not a klutz or taking it on the road all the time it covers all defects for 2 years for free.
