Question

Configuring a cloud backup service

Apr 14, 2011 12:38PM PDT

To be short and to the point, I want to setup a service with my clients and allow them to back up to one of my servers. What I would like to do is allow client connections via WinScp to a ssh server that has home directories for each user to backup data. If users want their data I would like them to be able to connect to my apache web server (same as ssh) and download from anywhere.

Is there a way for apache to link web directories on the server to the actual /home/user account and use the same login information?? Does this make sense? I really appreciate the help. I am not a developer or else I would simply develop a user friendly front end for to an ssh server. Since that is the case I think this is the best solution for me, as well as the easiest for the client. THANKS!!

I think something got lost in translation about what a cloud is. For example I we unplugged that server would your cloud servers fail over and carry on?

Its a cloud if I say it is.

Thanks for the reply. Although I wasnt asking for the definition of a cloud and I dont see how redundancy and fail overs have anything to do with cloud computing anyways. Last time I checked, servers were using these technologies before the word cloud computing was even coined. Thanks.

Sorry about that. New forum software.

The answer to your question is yes. You should be able to get some local linux/web/apache/coder to gen this up for you. Figure at most a few days and if it needs to look great, check they know photoshop and show you their previous works.

Glad to read you are calling it a cloud but I'd be careful about using that term as many folk will grill you about your cloud services.

--> At this point you need a developer to help you create your solution. There would be many steps and some web coding to do. But this forum is not about coding. But a discussion forum.

Maybe you really wanted someone to answer with steps, code and support for your service and system but I would be guessing.

--> Maybe you wanted to find the right search on google to learn more but here's the rub. With out a programming background you may be upset at such work.

---> This is why I've answered your questions and a thought about what the next steps are.
