Computers communicating when they shouldn't

by jpalm622 / December 9, 2008 6:49 AM PST

I have 3 computers with an ethernet connection connected via a netgear router (WT624) to the internet, all are Cat 5e wired. The computers are all running XP Professional with different SP levels. Computer 1 is a Systemax, Computer 2 is an HP XT856, Computer 3 is an old Compaq laptop. The problem is the HP and the Systemax are talking to each other when we are using these two computers. Specifically, text from one computer will show up in the browser of the other computer, or embed text in Word from the other computer while I am using Word or just create havoc for the other person on the other computer. The Compaq laptop seems to be immune from these problems. I have checked the cables, switched routers, but I suspect some settings are incorrect. It just happened again when my wife started the Systemax and my HP I am using is opening different pages. Please help!

Windows firewall a on and clicking on the exception tab shows file and printer is enabled. But even if it is enabled why would I get such erratic behavior? Also, when viewing network connections it shows "Local Area Connection" as well as "1394 Connection". I don't know if this is relevant or not.
