Have you tried to run it

in Safe Mode? That prevents a lot of programs from loading that cause your problem. Also do not have a screensaver selected, that'll restart defrag each time it comes on.

Re: defrag stalls at 10%

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q286263 is the list of Microsoft articles on defrag problems. The second one mentioned (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/136836/EN-US/) might be applicable in your case, although it seems limited to Windows 95 only.

The first thing to try is Safe Mode, indeed.

You can try other programs like scandefrag (discussed in http://reviews.cnet.com/5208-6141-0.html?forumID=8&threadID=102436&messageID=1175400), but I get the impression that it only calls the Windows defrag, and won't help.

Or try a totally different program like Norton speeddisk. I'm sure it's in one their suites like Systemworks or the older Utilities, but I don't have any personal experience with it. This particular program isn't considered so bad, I think.

Hope this helps.

Change some of your settings

and always make sure that you run scandisk before running defrag.....it may be stopping and then locking up at 10% because of a bad file that actually needs to be repaired by scandisk first.

Open scandisk, click Advanced, and put check marks in the following:

Notify you only if errors are found
Replace Log
Delete Cross Linked Files
Free File Fragments
Check for Invalid Names, Dates, and Times
(Leave the check in HOST alone)

Close Advanced, put a checkmark in "auto fix errors" and don't do a thorough scan unless you later suspect that you might have a bad cluster/sector on the harddrive.

Now open Defrag....click Settings/Configure...take the checkmark out of "re-arrange my files" and make sure you leave a checkmark in 'every time I run the program'.

Here are some more 'tricks' you can do to get scandisk and defrag to run without incident......

That's a great tip. In case it doesn't work, you can always try a third party defrag program. They all have a 30-day free trial.

If you formatted, no need in defragging just yet.

And another option

Disable all screensavers. Click ct-alt-del and shut down all running programs except explorer and systray. Unplug your internet connection to isolate your computer from the net ('cause you've shut down your firewall). Then defrag.
