Resolved Question

Computer won't boot up

Apr 19, 2015 9:58AM PDT

Up until I went on vacation a week ago, my desk top worked fine. I turned it on last night when I got home and nothing happened...nothing...blank screen, and computer "on" light didn't come on. I tried again today and it started up but I got a black screen that showed:
<span id="INSERTION_MARKER">No boot device available
<span>SATA0: Installed
<span>SATA1: Installed
<span>SATA2: None
<span>SATA3: None
<span>SATA4: None
<span>SATA5: None
<span>

<span>I have the Windows 7 installation disk, so I put that in and it recognized it and gave me the option to fix or install. It said it couldn't fix, but I didn't know if I should install.
<span>

<span>This is a Dell computer, purchased Feb 2010
<span>6 GB DDR2 SDRAM AT 800 MHZ
<span>Windows 7 HOME PREMIUM 64
<span>ATI RADEON HD 4350 512 MB, RST
<span>500 GB SERIAL ATA II7200 RPM,M

I'd appreciate help. Is more information needed?

The error "No boot device available" is all over the web but here it doesn't nail it as a failed HDD or blown HDD contents. A bad HDD would not be able to be repaired by the boot DVD.

I'd try a new blank HDD and see if that can be installed and restored to.

reinstalling Win 7 would be useless?

Did you try? And do you know why most won't do that?

The idea is to save the old HDD contents. A new HDD is under 50 or less so that's cheap.

No, happily did not try. Thanks for your time and help. A new HDD it is!
